Thursday, December 1st, 2011

We received this funny email from our client about Gypsy Vanner Gondor and his new friend..  Made us laugh, so we thought we would share.

Gondor’s first day at his new home, a little plump, and wondering…….what is a resident “pig”?

Okay then……..seriously guys….this “thing” comes by daily for “treats”??
“Yes, Gondor, meet our free range Miss Piggy!”. (shhhhh, he was terrified for the first 2 visits!)

Happy New Year all!

Well 2011 has kicked off and we have a lot to celebrate this year. First we are celebrating our 10 years as breeders and importers of this magnificent breed of horse.

We are proud of the horses we added to this breed here in the US and proud of each and every horse we have sold over the years. Just to name a few. We have Taskin, Sundance Kid two buckskin stallions who not only have color but correct conformation with an abundance of hair. We also are proud of Rom Rye, Pride and Joy two of the gentlest stallions in the breed. Ghost who is truly one of a kind. Casanova who has left some pretty amazing fillies here in the US. The list could go on and on. I would however like to announce a few of our colts that are rising stars and will be breeding a select few mare this year. Segway may very well turn out to be the BEST buckskin stallion in the country. Charm who shows a lot of potential and has some pretty AMAZING breeding behind him. We also have Poser, a really heavy coming 3 year old who has an amazing personality and good traditional look to him. All these boys are offered for sale or have been sold over the past years.

We are very excited to announce that we will have a big color selection that includes but not limited to buckskins, palominos, bays, spotted, tri-color, piebald and MUCH MUCH more. Our goal is to offer the best quality horses of traditional conformation with the unique color as well as the black and whites. We feel conformation is more important than color so when we add the colored horses to our heard they much pass a 10 point system we use to evaluate the hose we at Gypsy MVP will promote.

Foaling season is just around the corner so make sure you check in regularly to find color and conformation all rapped up in one.

We are very thankful for our friends and clients over the past 10 years and truly think of them as family.

Well until next time happy trails

Doug, Erica and all the staff at Gypsy MVP

Made in England

The perfect Gypsy Vanner Stallion

This is a new stallion from the UK “Made in England” If he ticks more than five of these good points for you and you are looking for a Stallion – give us a call.

Do you want a stallion to be part of your family ? A stallion that all the family can have fun with, one all the family can ride, safe to put your children on bareback, can be climbed on by beginner from a bucket in the field, take out for the day with the family, loads himself onto a trailer, comes into the house, has been known to produce more filly foals than colts. If so- He’s your horse! Breeding to be confirmed by DNA. But we are 90% sure he is the son of the World famous Lottery stallion who sadly is no more, it is said the Lottery Stallion was sold at the world famous Appleby Horse Fair in the UK, the sale was well publicized as it was considerable. He is very like him in looks and has some markings that are almost identical, he has good bone, good body, a sweet pony head, good feather, and to top it off a real Gent.

Gypsy Vanner Stallions: Stud Service or Semen via Shipment?

Monday, October 18th, 2010

Gypsy Vanner Stallions have grown in popularity since the introduction in the United States in the mid 1990s. They were first bred by the Gypsy nomadic people to add flair to their caravans and still be a good pack horse. The breed originated from a combination of the Clydesdale, Fells pony, Highland pony and Dales pony. Standing at 14.2 – 15.2 hands tall, it is suitable for all athletic and riding purposes, favored in America for breeding.

When determining whether a Gypsy Vanner Stallion is appropriate for stud service, one must look at the unique characteristics.  The stallion should have a broad chest, short back and heavy hips.  The legs will have a flat bone at the knee and feathering that covers the front hooves.  With the right stud, one can expect a foal that is intelligent, strong, athletic, docile and colorful.

Gypsy Vanner Stud Service

There are several ways to produce an award winning Gypsy Vanner.  Many choose to purchase a high quality stallion, take their mare to a stud on another farm, or buy semen that is shipped to them directly.  Whatever method one chooses, be sure to research all information pertaining to cost and safety. Stud services normally run $1000 to $3000 depending on the strength of the breed. If a mare is taken to another farm for breeding, the owner may incur boarding and veterinarian expenses. The mare may not be receptive to the stallion and injuries could occur.

Transported Gypsy Vanner Semen

Transported semen has to be precise according to the mare’s date of ovulation. An experienced veterinarian will determine this time and the semen will need to be shipped out 24 hours prior. Fed Ex is normally utilized for overnight transportation, but this becomes a problem on weekends. Shipments are not picked up on Saturdays and Sundays, making a Monday insemination difficult. The owner of the receiving mare may need to wait another 21 days for ovulation.  A problem with transported semen is their length of life. They do not live as long as live cover cells due to the stress of collection and shipping. This makes the timing of ovulation of utmost importance. A positive aspect is the ability to keep the mare on her own farm. Some get stressed when placed inside a trailer for transporting. Those mares that already have a foal do not have to worry about being separated during the insemination process.

Purchasing a Gypsy Vanner Stallion for Your Breeding Program

Purchasing a Gypsy Vanner Stallion can set one back several thousands of dollars. The cost depends on the bloodline of the shire and stud. Average prices range from $10,000 to $45,000 with mares costing slightly lower. Once a purchase is made and the Gypsy Vanner Stallion has been registered, regular veterinarian checkups need to be completed. The difference with breeding in this manner is the restriction to only the stallion you have purchased. Most breeders will collect several stallions to offer more bloodlines when running an actual business. For individuals simply wanting a quality Gypsy Vanner Stallion, other means of breeding may be more appropriate and cost effective.
